beauty fact or fiction: blushes make you look clownish

Bopha Mom-Baccam - Friday, June 05, 2015

Fiction! If you look like a China doll after putting on blush it's likely because of one of two reasons - the wrong brush or the wrong application.

Don't use small brushes. Use a medium to large tapered brush with soft bristles to apply blush from the apples of your cheeks, blending in a straight line towards your ear. Also, be sure to start with less product and apply more as needed so you don't accidentally end up with too much color on your cheeks.

beauty fact or fiction: makeup makes you breakout

Bopha Mom-Baccam - Friday, May 29, 2015

Fiction! If you are someone who suffers from acne, the ingredients in your makeup are not to blame for your breakouts! There are many more factors that contribute to skin health such as: not storing makeup properly, poor hygiene, which could allow bacteria to thrive in your products, not properly sanitizing your brushes and sharing your makeup with family and friends. So before you swear off makeup for the supposed good of your skin, make sure you aren't committing these common skincare mistakes!

Also, always be sure to remove your makeup before bed so that your pores are not clogged!

how to wash your hair - the RIGHT way

Bopha Mom-Baccam - Wednesday, May 27, 2015

It's something you do practically every day, but is the way you're washing your hair actually damaging your strands? You might be wondering, "How can there be a wrong way to wash my hair?" but the real reason your hair looks and feels so great after a trip to the salon is that the pros understand that how you wash your hair is key to a great hairstyle and overall hair health! Since the correct technique can make a huge difference in your hair's health and shine, we've researched the right way to wash your hair to keep you from damaging your hair without even realizing it.

1. Rinse
It may come as no surprise that hair should be thoroughly wet before adding your shampoo, and using hot water will open the hair cuticle which is good for getting rid of any dirt or leftover product trapped in the hair. Another benefit is that when your hair is rinsed in warm water it loosens the oils through the scalp and opens the cuticle so it can absorb the oils in your conditioner more easily.

2. For long hair, condition first
We're not joking! If you have hair below the shoulders, protect your delicate ends from drying out and further damage by putting a small amount of conditioner on them, then lightly rinse before adding shampoo. Not only does this keep ends healthy but it also fills any holes in the cuticle with moisture, therefore making hair shiny and smooth.

3. Shampoo - scalp only
Hair at the scalp is the youngest and the oiliest, whereas hair at the ends is the oldest, driest and most fragile. To clean your hair where it actually needs it and preserve the fragile ends, you only need to shampoo hair at the scalp, and in particular, the nape. Lather up your roots and the ends of your hair will get enough shampoo from it rinsing out so no need to add shampoo directly to your delicate ends!
Also, make sure you're not using more shampoo than you really need. A quarter-sized amount is enough, unless you have overly thick or long hair in which case you can double that amount.

4. Handle with care
Your hair is very fragile, especially when wet, and friction can permanently damage your hair's cuticle causing breakage and frizz. So consider washing your hair like you would hand wash your delicates - very carefully.
Start to lather at the roots using vertical strokes with medium pressure. This increases blood flow to the scalp and stimulates hair growth. Don't use circular motions which can tangle your hair and do not scrub the fragile ends or use a back and forth motion.

5. Don't rinse and repeat
Despite what the back of your shampoo bottle says, there is no need to wash your hair twice. Unless your hair is extremely dirty or the first shampoo didn't lather, washing twice only strips the hair further.

6. Condition from mid-lengths to tips
After you've rinsed out your shampoo, squeeze some of the water out of your hair then apply a liberal amount of conditioner from your mid-lengths to the tips, since that is where hair is driest and in need of the most hydration. Do not apply conditioner directly to your roots since the natural oil from your scalp is more concentrated there and will only cause your scalp to look and feel oily faster.
Finish showering and leave rinsing out your conditioner for last as the longer it stays in, the better it will absorb.

7. Rinse with cold water
Just like warm water opens up cuticles, cold water will shut the cuticle tight, sealing the shingle-like outer layer which will cause it to reflect light and give off the most shine. So finish your shower with a cold water rinse and voilà! You're on your way to healthier, happier hair!

how to wear bright lips for summer

Bopha Mom-Baccam - Thursday, May 14, 2015

Wearing a bold lip color can seem intimidating but this look is always hot for summer so we're here to put you at ease! We guarantee that all you need to rock this look is a little know-how and the right equipment!

Start out by powdering your lips with whatever face powder you use. This will create a blank slate on your lips so that the lipstick will be it's true color and not the color of your skin underneath as well. Putting powder on first will also help the lipstick to wear longer!

Next, take your lip liner and keeping an open-mouthed smile, begin to apply along the outer edges of your lips. You might look funny while doing this, but keeping the edges of your lips stretched while applying liner will allow for a nice, clean line. (Pro tip: For color longevity, match the color of your lip liner to the same shade of the desired lipstick and fill in the entire lip. You can fill in the entire lip with lip liner for the perfect look and stop there OR go back in with your lipstick for an even bolder and long-lasting look).

Once you've finished outlining, use the lip wand (if you've decided to add more color and not stop at only lip liner), not your finger, when applying the lipstick to get the most pigment. After applying the color, however, use a lip brush and not the lipstick wand to do the perimeter. Doing this will allow you to have more control and precision over how the outer edge looks.

Finally, use concealer on the outer edges of your lips just outside your lipstick line to clean up any mistakes you may have made and to create a sharp, crisp line! (Pro tip: Make sure when using concealer to clean up lips that you don't choose a color that is too light or your lips will have a white halo around them!)

And there you go! The key to pulling off a bright lip is all in the tools, the precision, and having the guts to even try it out! So get out there and put your best lips forward!

follow these rules for heavenly lashes

Bopha Mom-Baccam - Friday, May 08, 2015

Some makeup trends might come and go but long, luscious lashes are always in style! And although false lashes are fun and flirty, it's important to know how to get that same gorgeous look with your own lashes and mascara wand.
So follow these five rules to get perfect lashes every time without having to resort to expensive extensions or time-consuming falsies.

1. Curl your lashes
Start your quest for draw-dropping lashes off right by using a lash curler before applying mascara. Curling before mascara will reduce breakage and damage since eyelashes are more supple when bare. Choose a wand that creates an upward curl and then with a delicate pumping motion start from the lash base and move upward for the best results.

2. Let lashes dry
The phrase, "Patience is a virtue" was probably first said by somebody doing their lashes. To get the big, bold lashes you want, it's best to give each coat some time to set between layers. This allows the mascara time to set and build on one another instead of gooping into one big, messy clump (which isn't the look you're going for).

3. Use a lash comb
To avoid undesirable spidery lashes, use a metal-toothed lash comb in between coats. This will give you long and full, even-looking lashes instead of a clumpy, spidery mess. So, apply a coat, wait a few seconds, then brush through lashes and apply the next coat.

4. Don't layer different mascaras
This usually isn't a good idea since some formulas will not mix well and will end up clumping. However, if there is a wand you prefer over another one, it's okay to mix and match, just clean it off and use it with your favorite mascara or as a lash comb.

5. Give your lashes some TLC
Your lashes need to be treated and conditioned just like your hair. To create a smooth surface for your mascara use a lash conditioner, which works the same as a primer. For a more permanent solution, if you've always wanted longer, darker, thicker lashes, you could consider a growth treatment, like Latisse, which helps to stimulate the eyelash growth cycle.

Follow these steps and we guarantee everyone will be asking how you got those heavenly lashes!

how to get long hair without extensions

Bopha Mom-Baccam - Friday, May 01, 2015

The wait for longer hair can be exhausting and frustrating but before you turn to expensive hair extensions, let us give you some tips on the healthiest and fastest way to some Rapunzel tresses!

Change your diet
What we put into our bodies is reflected in our hair. The secret to strong, thick, shiny hair is all about your diet! Eating a variety of healthy foods will give you the strands you've always dreamed of, so start hair growth out right by getting enough of these 6 nutrients:

1. & 2. Iron and Zinc - Iron and zinc are responsible for sending oxygen to your hair follicles which helps them to grow and build strong hair.
Where to find it: Lean, red meat, poultry, fish, lentils, beans and spinach twice a week

3. Vitamin D - Studies have shown that Vitamin D may help activate hair growth, however few foods contain it naturally. Being in the sun a few minutes every day can do the trick, however, if you are worried about exposure to UV rays the next best thing is a daily 1,000 IU supplement.
Where to find it: Milk, yogurt, salmon, cod liver oil, swordfish, eggs, sun exposure, dietary supplements

4. Protein - One of the building blocks of life, protein promotes cell growth and repair and helps boost hair strength. Women should aim for 46 grams a day.
Where to find it: Tuna (33 grams of protein), roasted chicken (32 grams), lean flank steak (31 grams), soybeans (21 grams), non-fat, plain Greek yogurt (15 grams); other sources include: salmon, turkey, lamb, beans, nuts and milk

5. Omega-3 Fatty Acids - When it comes to fat, there's one kind you don't want to scale back on: omega-3 fatty acids. Two mega important ones, DHA and EPA, are found in primarily in certain fish. For hydrated, silky hair, eat omega-3 fatty acids twice a week or take up to 1 gram of a DHA or EPA supplement a day.
Where to find it: Salmon, tuna, anchovies, sardines, eggs and peanut butter

6. Biotin - Biotin supports the health of the skin and is essential for hair growth.
Where to find it: Eggs, whole-grain cereal, whole-wheat bread, dairy products, nuts, salmon and chicken

With that being said...
It's also important not to over do it. Keeping weight stable and not switching from diet to diet are also important to hair health since hair can be affected by extreme changes, in addition to stress and hormone levels.

Turn off the heat
We all know heat damages your hair, so limit the use of flat irons, curlers and blow dryers to around three times a week. A weekly conditioning masque is also a good idea for keeping hair healthy. We recommend Kevin Murphy Angel. Masque, a strengthening and thickening treatment for fine, coloured hair to get amazing results! Also try Kevin Murphy Un.Tangled, a leave-in conditioner formulated with nourishing Australian fruit extracts. Un.Tangled helps to detangle, strengthen and restore hair with added heat protection. We swear by these products for baby soft hair!

Relax
Stress affects hair health (no surprise there!), so don't forget to treat yourself with your favorite relaxing activity weekly to de-stress. Whether that means reading a good book, popping in a movie or getting a deep tissue massage, do whatever it takes to relax your mind and body. Your hair is a reflection of how you feel, so if you are healthy and relaxed your hair will reflect it!!

Messy, undone hair and braids are so in right now, so we combined the two for the perfect beachy braid that Megan wanted! Our stylist, Kathleen, decided to do a 3-D double fishtail braid to get this fab look and she used Kevin Murphy Easy.Rider with Powder.Puff to get the perfect undone texture that lasts all day!

This hairstyle looks great on second-day hair and stays in place whether you're on the go or just lounging at the pool! Perfect for those hot summer days and nights coming up!
